Abstract

This qualitative case study aimed to: (1) analyze changes in mathematics learning management concepts based on the TLSOA framework, and (2) analyze shifts in beliefs regarding teacher roles and the nature of mathematics learning through the Lesson Study process. The research participants were eight graduate students in the Master of Education program in Science and Mathematics Teaching at Thaksin University without a background in pedagogical studies, who served as key informants for reflections and in-depth interviews. Research instruments included final reflective journals, in-depth interviews, teaching artifacts, and behavioral observation logs. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis and validated through member checking.

The findings revealed that: (1) In terms of concepts, all pre-service teachers (100%) underwent a paradigm shift from teacher-centered instruction to student-centered learning. Their focus transitioned toward designing open-ended problem situations and utilizing Japanese board writing (Bansho) to systematically connect students’ diverse ideas. (2) In terms of beliefs, the majority of the pre-service teachers (75%) transformed their perspectives, viewing the teacher’s role as a learning experience designer rather than a knowledge transmitter. Furthermore, they perceived the nature of mathematics as a dynamic process in which students’ errors are regarded as vital resources for constructing deeper understanding.
